Retrieved Nov 27 from https: Nadya Chishty-Mujahid Book Title: Meticulously researched and well-written, if a trifle wordy in places, the book painstakingly delineates the changing dynamics of the history and culture of this region dating from the Mughal era to the last century. On introducing his text, Nichols makes it very clear that no study of the region that claims to be comprehensive can do the Peshawar valley any justice if the contentious years of Mughal imperial rule are left out of the equation.
He posits that far too heavy an emphasis has been placed by scholars and historians alike on nineteenth-century colonial views of the area, and while he naturally acknowledges these to be of tremendous significance, he does not view colonial scholarship as the only lens through which Peshawari socio-economic and historical development should be viewed. By the time one completes reading the book, one finds oneself to be in agreement with him.
Nichols therefore spends considerable time at the commencement of his text indeed well into a third of the book describing the development and influence of the powerful Yusufzai clan, especially their frequent and often fraught interactions with the imperialist forces of Emperor Akbar. He illustrates how the rich, irrigated soil of the valley led to multiple internecine squabbles for power, both financial and gubernatorial between various clans of the area.
He also comments on the issues faced by rulers such as maliks and arbabs in arbitrating a region that was alternately lawless and rebellious. A quick side point that I should make here is that though he comments extensively on maliks, arbabs, etc. However, his tables and appendices help clarify many points in the book that a reader may initially find obscure.

The distinguishing features of Karachi which led to the formation of the original fishing village of Kolachi have long since been swallowed up by the increasingly massive population and haphazard unplanned expansion, but moving just a few miles away from the city reveals the natural beauty of the place.
